The word "MANGA" refers to Japanese comics, which influence a huge part of Japanese subculture. Lots of MANGA books are now available in English and the other languages as well as Japanese animations. Here are some masterpieces to enter the MANGA world. これも英訳されているのでは？ 国民的な人気を博し、TVアニメやゲームにもなっている作品。仲間との出会いや別れ、壮絶なバトルを繰り広げながらワンピースと呼ばれる悲報を探す海賊たちの物語。ギャグ漫画的な要素も含みつつも、よく練り込まれたストーリーが読者を物語に引き込む秀作。“人との別れ”を描いた場面は必見で、いくつかの場面は涙でしっかり読めませんでした…。
The main character is a charming cat named Nekomura, who works as a housekeeper for a family. Its simple style of drawings and the humorous stories that happen between the cat and the family have obtained many fans. This comic is only published in Japanese so far, but still you can enjoy with the illustrations.

This is an original piece by the godfather, Osamu Tezuka. Black Jack is an unlicensed doctor, who could cure any kinds of patients with his god hands, in return for an extraordinary charge. Reading through the series of short stories, you will come across the question - what is the meaning of life and death? There is a cute little assistant for Jack, called Pinoko, adding some comical touch to its rather serious stories.
漫画界の巨匠・手塚治虫の作品のひとつ。主人公・ブラックジャックは、無免許ながらも敏腕の医者が次々と難病に立ち向かう。さすがは巨匠、そのテーマも深く、生きる、死ぬことの意味について考えさせられます。この作品を読むときは、しっかりと腰を据えて読みましょう。ちなみに、助手のピノコがとってもキュート。
If you are interested in old-skool MANGA, check out "Choju-Giga". Just finished the exhibition at Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo, this 12th to 13th centuries' work is considered as the origin of modern Japanese comics. "Choju-Giga" consists of some picture rolls that illustrate various animals behaving like human in a comical manner.
もし、むかーしの漫画に興味があるのであれば、ぜひともご覧あれ。サントリー美術館でも展覧会が開催されましたが、日本最古の漫画と言われている『鳥獣戯画』。いくつかの絵巻物で構成されていて、どうやら1200年代から1300年代に描かれたようです。動物たちが人間のごとく動いたり、話している様子は必見！
